Kestutis Svirnelis (b. 1976) is Lithuanian, lives in Germany, and works as an artist world-wide; besides Germany and Lithuania, he has exhibited in England, Austria, Turkey, South Korea and San Francisco, among other locations. It is relatively easy for him as an individual, possibly because of his own cultural imprinting, to respectfully engage with other cultures. And as a focused, reflected artist, he succeeds time and again in fathoming the Other and Oneself in all their eleva-tions, surfaces, and depths, and to form an artistic expression out of the results of this reflection. Only, what could this “Other” and “Oneself” be for a Lithuanian artist, I ask myself, who lives in Germany, indeed who has come to be at home in Stuttgart, and whose Lithuanian soul already shows visible Swabian shades? Because Svirnelis, like so many people who live or have lived abroad for a long time, is somehow a foreigner both here and there. He lives in between. Between his homeland, which he left over a decade ago, and the Swabian city of Stutt-gart, the current pivoting point of not only his artistic actions. In this “in between space”, it is possible for him to see and to say things in a very specific way, as well as to respect and to criticize, to love and to reject. One could possibly say that this in-between opens for him a certain free space, which very probably does not exist elsewhere.
