The Support of Society
2009
Crutches, kickstand, 130 x 50 x 50 cm

A kickstand and a pair of crutches have been assembled. It stands completely free and by itself and it exposes the guy who built it to be a liar – for, who needs crutches needs crutches. The context of the exhibition in which this piece was presented originally was a political one which gave the reading a tendency towards a critique of society. Who needs such kind of support? And why does such a person expose himself so openly, so dishonestly? These questions could arise, questions addressing ethics and personal standing, questions concerning the individual and the individual within a system, let’s say the welfare system. Very cynically, and with an undertone that does not lack self-criticism, Svirnelis seems to reflect himself as an artist in such social structures.
